The Humble Witness
This powerful message takes us deep into John 1:19-28, where we encounter John the Baptist facing religious leaders who desperately want to know his identity. What unfolds is a masterclass in humility and purpose. John is asked repeatedly if he's the Messiah, Elijah, or the prophet, and each time he responds with a simple but profound 'no.' He knows exactly who he is not, and that knowledge liberates him to fulfill his true calling. The sermon challenges us with an uncomfortable truth: we often try to be Jesus in people's lives. We attempt to be the savior of our families, the answer to everyone's problems, the fixer of all situations. This exhausting posture leads to burnout, bitterness, and frustration. John's example shows us a different way. By quoting Isaiah 40:3, he identifies himself simply as 'a voice crying in the wilderness,' preparing the way for the Lord. He's not the light, but he points to it. He's not the Word, but he amplifies it. The message invites us to examine our own lives: Are we trying to carry burdens we were never meant to bear? Are we seeking recognition instead of redirecting glory to Jesus? When we finally embrace that we are not the Messiah, we discover the freedom to be exactly who God called us to be: witnesses who point others to the One who truly transforms.
