Baptism

More than water.
A life surrendered.

Baptism isn't about earning salvation or completing a religious ritual. It's a faith-filled response to the grace of God: turning to Jesus, confessing Him as Lord, and beginning a new life as His disciple.

Jesus saves. Baptism doesn't replace grace or faith. In Scripture, baptism belongs to our surrendered response to the gospel.
Baptism at South Lake Church of Christ
Buried with Christ. Raised to new life.
Romans 6:3-4
Our goal isn't simply to get someone baptized. Our goal is to help people become disciples of Jesus.
What Is Baptism?

United with Jesus.
Raised to new life.

In the New Testament, baptism is not presented as an empty ceremony. It is a God-given response of faith in which a person is united with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection and begins a new life under His lordship.

01 · Death

We leave the old life behind.

Repentance means turning from self-rule and sin toward God. Baptism gives visible expression to that surrender: the old life no longer gets the final word.

ROMANS 6:3 · ACTS 2:38
02 · Burial

We are united with Christ.

Going beneath the water pictures burial with Jesus. Our confidence is not in the water itself, but in Jesus and in God's saving work through Him.

ROMANS 6:4 · COLOSSIANS 2:12
03 · Resurrection

We rise to walk differently.

Baptism points forward, not merely backward. We rise to a new life with Jesus, learning to follow Him as Lord in everything.

ROMANS 6:4 · GALATIANS 3:26-27
Romans 6:4
"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead... we too may live a new life."

The power is not in the water.

The power belongs to God. Baptism has meaning because of Jesus' death and resurrection and because we respond to Him in faith. We are not earning salvation; we are surrendering to the One who saves.

Responding To The Gospel

Grace comes first.
Jesus stays at the center.

Christianity doesn't begin with what we do for God. It begins with what God has done for us in Jesus. The New Testament calls us to receive that grace through a living, surrendered faith.

God Acts

Grace

God loved us first. Jesus died for our sins and rose again. Salvation is His gift, not something we earn.

EPHESIANS 2:8-9 · ROMANS 5:8
We Trust

Faith in Jesus

We trust who Jesus is and what He has done, placing our confidence in Him rather than ourselves.

JOHN 3:16 · ROMANS 3:22-24
Faith Responds

Surrender

Biblical faith isn't merely agreement in our heads. It turns toward Jesus and responds to Him.

Repentance - turning from sin and self-rule toward God.
Confession - acknowledging Jesus as Lord.
Baptism - being immersed into Christ as a faith-filled response to the gospel.
ACTS 2:38 · ROMANS 10:9 · GALATIANS 3:26-27
A New Beginning

Discipleship

We rise to follow Jesus. Baptism isn't the finish line; it marks the beginning of a life learning to obey Him.

MATTHEW 28:19-20 · ROMANS 6:4

One response of surrendered faith.

We don't treat faith, repentance, confession, and baptism as separate achievements that add up to salvation. Jesus saves. These belong together as the biblical response of a person turning to Him.

This is not a salvation checklist.

You cannot earn God's grace by getting every step "right." At the same time, we don't want to separate things Scripture repeatedly holds together. Our aim is simple: hear the gospel, trust Jesus, surrender to Him, and begin following Him as Lord.

Essential & Important

Know Jesus.
Keep growing.

We want people to have real biblical conviction without turning baptism into a theology exam. Some truths belong at the heart of a person's surrender to Jesus. Other truths matter deeply and should continue shaping our understanding as we grow.

Essential · At the heart of conversion

Who are you surrendering to?

The center is not perfect terminology. The center is Jesus and a genuine response to the gospel.

01Jesus is Savior and Lord. Our hope rests in His death and resurrection, not our religious performance.
02Faith is personal trust. We are placing our confidence in Jesus and choosing to belong to Him.
03Repentance is real.We turn from sin and self-rule toward God.
04Baptism expresses surrendered faith. We willingly enter the water to be immersed into Christ and begin life as His disciple.
Important · Truths we keep learning

Baptism means more than we grasp in one day.

A person doesn't need exhaustive theological knowledge before baptism. But Scripture gives baptism rich meaning worth learning and teaching faithfully.

+Immersion reflects the biblical picture.Burial and resurrection are powerfully pictured in going under the water and rising again.
+Baptism is connected with forgiveness and new life.We shouldn't weaken connections Scripture itself makes.
+Baptism identifies us with Christ.Romans 6, Galatians 3, and Colossians 2 deepen our understanding of union with Jesus.
+We keep studying.Christians can continue growing in their understanding of baptism, the Holy Spirit, covenant, salvation, and discipleship.

You don't have to understand everything before you obey Jesus.

You do need to understand the decision you're making. Baptism is not about passing a test. It is about trusting Jesus, turning to Him, and surrendering your life to Him as Lord. Then we keep learning together for the rest of our lives.

Already Baptized?

We want to hear
your story.

If you've already been baptized, we don't begin by assuming your baptism was invalid, and we don't simply assume that getting wet sometime in the past settles every question. We want to understand how you came to faith in Jesus.

Baptism at South Lake Church of Christ

This isn't an interrogation and it isn't about whether you used all the same words we use. It's a conversation about Jesus, your faith, your baptism, and the decision you understood yourself to be making.

Question 01

Who did you understand Jesus to be?

We want to hear what you believed about Jesus and the gospel when you were baptized.

Question 02

Why did you choose to be baptized?

Was it your own response of faith, or something you did mainly because someone else expected it?

Question 03

Were you surrendering to Jesus as Lord?

Not whether you understood everything, but whether you were personally turning to Jesus and choosing to follow Him.

Question 04

What happened after the water?

Baptism begins a life of discipleship. We want to understand the journey that followed and where you are with Jesus today.

You may not need to be baptized again.

If your baptism was a genuine expression of repentant faith and surrender to Jesus, our goal isn't to manufacture another baptism. If your story raises real questions, tell us a little about where you are below. We'll listen, open the Bible together, and help you develop conviction about your next step.

Baptism Questions

Let's make room for honest questions.

Baptism at South Lake Church of Christ

Baptism has been discussed and debated by Christians for centuries. We don't expect everyone to arrive with every question settled. Here are a few of the conversations we have most often.

Does baptism save me?
Jesus saves. We are saved by God’s grace, not because water or a religious act has power in itself (Ephesians 2:8–9). At the same time, the New Testament consistently places baptism within a person’s response of faith to the gospel (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3–4; Galatians 3:26–27). We therefore don’t separate baptism from faith, repentance, and surrender to Jesus. Baptism is not how we earn grace. It is a faith-filled response to the grace God has already offered us in Christ.
Why does South Lake practice baptism by immersion?
We practice immersion because we believe it best reflects the New Testament meaning and pattern of baptism. The word translated “baptize” comes from the Greek baptizō, commonly meaning to immerse or dip. Immersion also beautifully portrays what Paul describes in Romans 6:3–4: being buried with Christ and raised to walk in new life. See also Acts 8:36–39 and Colossians 2:12.
Do I have to understand everything about baptism before I’m baptized?
No. You don’t need a theology degree before you can follow Jesus. But you should understand the decision you are making. We want you to know the gospel, personally trust Jesus, turn toward Him in repentance, and understand that you are surrendering to Jesus as Lord and beginning a life as His disciple. You can spend the rest of your life growing in your understanding of everything baptism means.
What if I was baptized as an infant?
We respect the faith and intentions of families who practice infant baptism. At South Lake, however, we practice believer’s baptism because the pattern we see in the New Testament is that people hear the gospel, believe, repent, and then are baptized (Acts 2:37–41; Acts 8:12). If you were baptized as an infant, we’d love to talk with you about personally choosing to respond to Jesus in faith and baptism.
What if I was baptized at another church?
Being baptized somewhere other than South Lake Church of Christ does not mean you need to be baptized again. We care much more about what was happening between you and Jesus than the name on the church building. We’ll simply listen to your story: what you believed about Jesus, why you were baptized, whether it was your decision, and whether you understood yourself to be surrendering to Him as Lord.
How do I know if I need to be baptized again?
We don’t want to manufacture doubt about a genuine baptism, nor do we want to give false assurance simply because someone went through a ceremony. If you have questions about a previous baptism, we’ll listen to your story and open Scripture with you. If you genuinely responded to Jesus in repentant faith and were baptized as an expression of that surrender, you may not need to be baptized again. If that wasn’t what happened, we can help you study, pray, and develop your own conviction about your next step.
What if someone trusts Jesus but dies before they can be baptized?
Our confidence is in the mercy and judgment of God, not in our ability to construct a rule for every exceptional circumstance. Scripture calls people who hear the gospel to respond in faith, repentance, and baptism, so we teach and practice what Jesus and the apostles taught rather than using exceptional circumstances to dismiss the biblical pattern. At the same time, God is the Judge, Jesus is the Savior, and we trust Him to judge perfectly and mercifully. Our responsibility is to faithfully respond to what He has revealed.
What happens after baptism?
Baptism is not graduation day. It’s the beginning of a life with Jesus. Jesus calls us to make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:19–20). After baptism, we want to help you grow through Scripture, prayer, Christian community, serving others, sharing your faith, and learning to live every part of your life under the lordship of Jesus.
Ready For Your Next Step?

Don't just learn about baptism.
Follow Jesus.

Maybe you're ready to be baptized. Maybe you still have questions. Maybe you simply know it's time to take your faith seriously. Wherever you are, you don't have to take the next step alone.

Jesus is Lord. Baptism isn't the destination. A life of following Jesus is.
